I specialize in active addiction and in addiction recovery; however, my scope does not end there.
Whatever has brought you here - the weariness of depression, the struggle of addiction, the heaviness of anxiety, the uncertainty of life in its entirety - I welcome you. Whether you have experienced a trauma, are going through a life transition, or just need someone to talk to, someone who will listen without judgement or scorn, my passion and goal as a clinician is to hold the space for you, walk with you through the darkness, guide you to peace and well-being, and help you to live a life you love.

These include: depression, anxiety, addiction, loss of identity, spiritual and existential crisis, low self worth, relationships, etc.
Sometimes, when you find yourself in the dark you think you have been buried, when actually, you have always been planted and given an opportunity to grow.I am here to help you find your way out of the dark and guide you back to yourself, to the light, and towards an aligned and authentic life.I will walk with you through the journey towards healing, growth, and the freedom that comes with becoming who you were born to be, reintegrating you with the true essence of love, kindness, and a life worth living, which is often found on the other side of the pain.Together we co-create a sacred space where both of us show up as we are.

I have extensive experience working with LGBTQ+ communities; with substance use and addiction concerns; and with people affected by loss, illness and trauma.
I draw on the commonalities that exist between therapeutic approaches, and am aligned with anti-oppression perspectives. I utilize deep, introspective practices and pragmatic, solution-oriented practices to help clients cultivate greater self-compassion; achieve greater effectiveness in their relationships and communities; and grow towards deeper fulfillment in their lives. I am also able to offer a truly holistic therapy, combining talk therapy, mindfulness, and movement. I am a good fit for those impacted by marginalization, those with shame and self-esteem challenges, those impacted by trauma and addiction, and for couples.

I have been working as a counsellor for over ten years and specialize in working with trauma, substance use and mental health conditions.
There are so many reasons a person might choose to seek counselling. Perhaps some life experience has left you feeling overwhelmed and disconnected; perhaps you struggle with depression or anxiety. There may be behaviours that you are engaging in that you don’t feel good about or are causing problems in your life, or maybe there’s a more general feeling of malaise or low self esteem. If you want to move forward in your life, change behaviours or unwanted patterns; restore a sense of meaning and purpose; build confidence and vitality; and learn healthier ways to cope with life's challenges... I believe I can help!

I understand it can be difficult to reach out for help, whether you or your loved ones are experiencing substance use issues, anxiety, depression, pornography issues, family conflict, or problems with interpersonal relationships.
As a Registered Clinical Counsellor/Psychotherapist with 25 years of experience working with individuals, couples, and families, I use a client-centred, integrative approach to address the therapeutic goals of clients. No one should be defined by their diagnoses, and rather than placing emphasis on what is not working, I collaborate with clients to determine what actions can be taken to improve on their circumstances. All individuals exist along their own continuum of mental health, and with adequate supports and a focus on holistic well-being, every client can be nurtured towards growth and a healthier sense of self.

Hi there, my name is Maryam, and I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC). My goal is to provide you a safe space to express how you’re feeling. I am a second-generation South-Asian settler living, working, and playing, on the sacred, stolen, and ancestral territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. I identify as a third-culture kid and know how difficult it can be to feel like you belong, especially while struggling with the multiple pressures of our communities or families.

Being a human comes with all kinds of challenges; whether you've struggled with your relationship to food and your body, substance use, or disconnection from your day to day. Feeling overwhelmed, down on yourself, and isolated, can impact every aspect of our lives from our relationships, to our work, and to our physical health. Sometimes our struggles get bigger than us and feel too daunting to tackle on our own. Reaching for help can allow you to feel empowered and at ease within your life.

So whether it’s reduced anxiety, a more harmonious relationship, or changing your alcohol / substance use patterns, we’ve got you.
We all have things we’ve been told about ourselves that we internalize and start telling ourselves. Do you struggle with a story or belief about yourself that holds you back? Does this cause you some stress, loneliness, conflict in your relationships, or even lead you into misusing alcohol or substances? Now, more than ever, a lot of us are feeling disconnected from others and under the spell of negative stories about ourselves. In my practice, my team and I believe that these stories can be rewritten, that we are each the author of our own lives.

I focus on helping people who are struggling with substance use, depression, and anxiety.
I encourage you to reach out if you are struggling and want to adjust your path in life. Our bodies, mind, and emotions can be very good at letting us know something isn't right... yet finding, identifying, and changing that can be challenging! Talking really can help. We usually benefit from talking and being heard, a reminder of what works, and what we do well. I hope I can help you be more compassionate with yourself, accepting of what is out of your control, and to adjust what is in your power to change.

My desire to serve the community in which I grew up in, has always been important to me. I have worked at overdose prevention sites, harm reduction residential facilities, suicide crisis lines, and employment family assistance program (EFAP). I utilize a blend of evidence-based practices including humanistic culturally responsive and socially just approaches (CRSJ). I specialize in addiction, relationships, trauma, anxiety and depression.

I have extensive experience working in the areas of substance use and addictions, as well as family conflict.
We've all been in a place where we feel desperate for change with no idea how to begin. Many of us seek out counselling to address specific issues while others look for an ongoing therapeutic relationship to serve as a sounding board. Counselling can nurture the development of the necessary tools to make meaningful changes in pursuit of a more balanced and fulfilling life, something everyone deserves to have. Through an eclectic therapeutic approach, I strive to connect with each client in unique ways to best match their strengths and goals. Let's work together to figure out what works best for you to get you where you need to go.

My education in counselling is through Adler University. Through personal identity I am familiar with injury and disability culture.

I work with clients who want to find relief from their struggles with the following: depression, anxiety, anger, grief and loss, worthlessness, despair, disordered eating, life/work transitions, addiction (substances, pornography and gambling), and the negative impact of sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, and poverty. Often in the beginning, people come in feeling overwhelmed and frustrated and may be clearer initially of what isn't working for them or what they no longer want in their life. I believe these feelings are a resource to reveal what you do want in your life, what's important to you, your values, hopes, dreams and commitments.

What is the best therapy for addiction?
Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.
How long does therapy for addiction take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.
How effective is drug addiction treatment?
Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.
How can you get addiction treatment for someone?
The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
