I was picking up a few grocery items at the local supermarket when I overheard some other customers talking about battleships at Libby Library. Those who remember the game Battleship, or those new to it can play on a giant version of the beloved board game at the Libby Library in Old Orchard Beach. In this version of the game Library patrons can guess a coordinate in the same manner as they would in the regular version of the game. If their guess scores a hit, their name will be entered into a raffle making them eligible to win one of many fabulous prizes. Battleship will run until the end of August.

Talking about the Battleship game brought back many happy childhood memories, which led me to ask about some of the exciting and educational programs coming up for the kids in July. First of all there’s a Homeschool Outdoor Adventure happening on Friday, July 12. We’ll start at 10:30 a.m. with a fun outdoor learning adventure in Memorial Park. That will be followed up by
some social time in our Community Room where there’ll be plenty of toys and games to enjoy.

Then on Saturday, July 13, at 11 a.m. will be a Butterfly House Decorating event. Registration for this event began July 9. You can register either in person or by calling 934-4351. Registration is required as we have a limited number of kits available.

A pirate-themed Escape Room will be held Saturday, July 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. You’ll have a half hour to escape and avoid walking the plank.

One other thing we should mention is that the Interlibrary Loan Program is still on hiatus and most likely will remain so for the remainder of the summer. This is a great time to take advantage of the Reciprocal Borrowing Program. This allows you to take out material from other Reciprocal Borrowing member libraries, using your handy, dandy Libby Library card. You can find a list of libraries participating in reciprocal borrowing by going to our website, ooblibrary.org, and clicking on the Maine Reciprocal Borrowing Program icon. Libraries within driving range include McArthur Library in Biddeford, Scarborough Public Library, Thomas Memorial Library in Cape Elizabeth, Kennebunk Free Library and many more.

We suggest you check these libraries’ online catalogs if you’re looking for something specific. Remember, check outs and returns will both be at the owning library as we have no way to get material from or return material to other libraries at this time.

That’s a wrap for this month. Be sure to check our website and Facebook page for updates on these and other July events. We’ll be back here with news and information about our August events in a few weeks.
