nominee for WinterKids grant
Biddeford Recreation has been selected as a WinterKids Downhill 24 Outdoor Fund grant nominee in the Parks and Recreation division for 2024.
The Biddeford Recreation Department provides programs that promote social and physical well-being, as well as spaces for the public to engage in healthy lifestyle choices, according to a department press release. This grant would provide an opportunity to increase access to outdoor recreation in every season. It would assist the Recreation Department expand its outdoor programs by helping to off-set the rising cost of ski programming to make this sport more accessible to children in the community of all socioeconomic backgrounds. Portions of the funding would also be used to acquire additional equipment such as paddleboards, kayaks, and lifejackets to allow more children to participate in water programs during the summer season.
Community voting is now open online and is available through July 31. Winners will be selected in early August and the finalists in each category will be determined by votes with awards ranging from $1,000-$5,000 to support outdoor recreation locally.

New business leader
joins Rotary Club
Emily Pelletier is the newest member of the Rotary Club of Biddeford-Saco. Pelletier brings a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to community service that aligns perfectly with Rotary’s mission.
She is an owner and agent at Rousseau Insurance Agency in Biddeford.
“We are thrilled to welcome Emily to our club,” said Paulette Bonneau, club president. “It is an honor (to) officially induct Emily who demonstrates leadership and a passion for service. She will be invaluable as we continue our efforts to make a positive impact in our community.”
The Rotary Club of Biddeford-Saco meets on the first, third, and fourth Wednesday of the month at 12:15 p.m. at the Run of the Mill Restaurant. Additionally, they hold a Rotary Social every second Thursday of the month at The Lincoln Hotel. This informal meeting provides an opportunity for anyone interested in learning more about Rotary or the service projects they lead to meet the team and explore joining their initiatives. Volunteer driver needed
for OOB Food Panty
A volunteer driver with their own vehicle is needed to pickup food locally and bring it to the Old Orchard Food Pantry at the United Methodist Church at the intersection of Washington and Fountain avenues. Interested parties can contact Julie Fisher at 413-588-1777.
Writers gather at oldest
writers conference in US
The 83rd Writers Conference at Ocean Park will be held starting at 4 p.m., Monday, Aug. 5 and continue through noon on Friday, Aug. 9. Registration at the door is $250. Preregister at $230 by calling ahead. For those who are not local, lodging is available in local motels, B&B’s, and Airbnb.
Seven traditionally published authors of fiction, poetry, and memoir will offer half-day workshops at this five-day conference. Conference attendees will also participate in a beach poetry workshop as well as enter the Poems on Trees competition.
Workshop presenters include: Maine’s former poet laureate Betsy Sholl, creative nonfiction writer Ryan Britt, poet Mike Bove, fiction writer Amy Neswald, poet David Stankiewicz, fiction writer Kathryn Williams, and poet/fiction writer Jim Brosnan, conference co-chair.

Hazardous Waste Collection
in Saco July 27
The city of Saco is partnering again with the cities of Scarborough and Biddeford to facilitate proper disposal of hazardous waste from residents of all three municipalities. Household hazardous waste collection events will take place in these communities throughout the year.
Some materials being collected include oil-based paints, paint thinner, pesticides, herbicides, gasoline, degreasers, wood stain, pool chemicals, drain cleaner, cleaning agents, and solvents.
Saco Public Works, located at 15 Phillips Spring Road, will be hosting a Household Hazardous Waste Collection on Saturday, July 27, from 8 a.m. to noon.
The next Household Hazardous Waste Collection takes place in Biddeford at 371 Hill St. on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 8 a.m. to noon.
To dispose of waste, proof of residency in Saco, Biddeford or Scarborough, such as a driver’s license, must be provided.

to ‘Tri for A Cure’
Town & Country FCU’s six ‘Tri for A Cure’ participants took time to gather for a pre-event photo at the credit union’s Saco branch. Collectively, Team TCFCU raised more than $10K in contributions, part of the credit union’s more than $25K total contribution to the 2024 ‘Tri for A Cure’, the credit union’s second highest contribution since it began participating in 2011. Town & Country Federal Credit Union contributed $25,000 through its sponsorship and fundraising efforts, to this year’s Annual ‘Tri For A Cure’, which took place on Sunday, July 14 at SMCC in South Portland. The event raised a record-setting $2.3 million for Maine Cancer Foundation. The credit union’s 2024 contribution was more than the second highest amount since the credit union began participating in 2011, according to a credit union press release.
David Libby, president and CEO of Town & Country FCU, said, “The ‘Tri for A Cure’ is an example of the credit union’s commitment to ‘local helping local’, an effort that goes well beyond financial services. Unfortunately, we have all been touched directly or indirectly by cancer so this is very personal to our staff, members and our community, and the opportunity to help aligns with who we are and what we do.”
In addition to the credit union’s long-standing support of ‘Tri for A Cure’, Town & Country is engaged with Maine Cancer Foundation throughout the year including the ‘CheckME’ program, which is a public service campaign encouraging and promoting early detection for all types of cancer created by the credit union. “Our partnership with Maine Cancer Foundation is extensive and continues to grow and evolve, and we are grateful to continue to work together to help fight cancer in Maine,” added Libby.
