A 38-year-old Casco man died Saturday afternoon after he crashed his car into trees off Poland Spring Road, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
Robert Stitham failed to successfully negotiate a curve on the Casco road shortly after 4 p.m. June 22 and narrowly missed a collision with another vehicle before leaving the road and ending up in the woods.
Stitham was wearing a seat belt but died at the scene. Speed and alcohol were factors in the crash, the sheriff’s office said.

On Sunday, a Standish man and a Norway woman had to be extricated from their vehicles after separate accidents in Sebago and Casco.
Wayne Whitney, 50, suffered broken bones and other serious injuries after the 2021 Subaru he was driving shortly after 10 a.m. left Folly Road in Sebago and struck several trees along the shore of Perley Pond, according to the sheriff’s office.
Sebago Fire and EMS freed Whitney from the vehicle and he was taken to Maine Medical Center. Whitney was not wearing a seat belt, the sheriff’s department said.
Later that morning, at 11:47 a.m. Connie Scott, 60, lost control of her 2006 Volkswagen Jetta when it had a mechanical malfunction on Meadow Road/Route 121, according to the sheriff’s office.
The car went off the road and rolled several times. Casco Fire and Rescue extricated Scott from the car and she was taken to Bridgton Hospital. She was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, which likely minimized serious injury, the sheriff’s office said.
