As we celebrate International Women’s Day 2024 under the theme ‘Inspire Inclusion,‘ we find ourselves reflecting on the countless ways women and girls contribute to shaping our world. At Population Media Center (PMC), we are proud to stand at the forefront of initiatives that empower women and challenge societal norms. Our work spans over two decades, dedicated to amplifying the voices of women and girls across the globe.

Challenging Norms, Empowering Women

Inspiring inclusion isn’t just a theme for us; it’s the cornerstone of our story. For over 20 years, PMC has been at the forefront of challenging social norms that hinder the progress and self-determination of women and girls. Through our innovative approach, combining transformative stories and entertainment education, we have tackled issues ranging from gender inequality and lack of education to child marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM).

Our formula for creating impactful entertainment traverses people, places, and media environments. Through compelling storylines spread across numerous episodes and seasons, we aim to reshape narratives and promote social and cultural change. At PMC, we choose to challenge norms not just on International Women’s Day, but every day, as we strive towards a sustainable planet with equal rights for all.

A Focus on Women’s Resilience: The Zambia Whitepaper

This International Women’s Day, we are excited to launch our latest whitepaper, which shines a spotlight on the incredible resilience of women in Zambia in the face of climate change. While women are often portrayed as helpless victims in mainstream media, the reality couldn’t be further from the truth.

In Zambia, climate change profoundly affects daily life, from access to water and food to education and healthcare. Long periods of drought, followed by heavy rains and floods, exacerbate existing challenges, disproportionately affecting women and girls. Yet, amidst these adversities, women emerge as powerful agents of change in their communities.

Meet the Changemakers: Voices from Zambia

In our whitepaper, we feature interviews with three remarkable Zambian activists who are leading the charge in addressing climate change and implementing solutions:

• Ruby Kryticous: A climate change and youth advocate, Ruby is a Board Member of the Green Agricultural Youth Organization (GAYO), a youth-led group championing environmental sustainability and community development.
• Nachilala Nkombo: Co-founder of Women Leaders for Climate Action, Nachilala is dedicated to enhancing women’s resilience to climate change by bridging gender gaps in accessing climate finance. She is also the former Country Director of World Wildlife Fund Zambia.
• Olivia Mwaba Zulu: As the Monitoring & Evaluation Manager at PMC Zambia and the National Focal Point for the Global Network of Civil Society Organizations for Disaster Reduction, Olivia brings a wealth of experience in disaster mitigation and family planning.
