Jens Stoltenberg

Jens Stoltenberg has been NATO secretary general since October 2014 and his mandate has been extended until the end of September 2023. Previously, he was the UN special envoy on climate change from 2013 to 2014 and has chaired UN high-level panels on climate financing and the coherence between development, humanitarian assistance, and environmental policies. From 2000 to 2001 and from 2005 to 2013, he served as prime minister of Norway, and from 1991 to 2014 he served as a member of the Norwegian Parliament. From 1996 to 1997, Stoltenberg was minister of finance and from 1993 to 1996 minister of industry and energy of Norway. Before embarking on a career in politics, he held a research post at the National Statistical Institute of Norway. Stoltenberg holds a postgraduate degree in economics from the University of Oslo.
