Menendez dismisses Daily Caller story as GOP pounces

Republicans pounced on a story by The Daily Caller Thursday airing allegations by two anonymous prostitutes from the Dominican Republic that Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez paid them for sex during a trip to the country earlier this year.

Menendez is expected to easily win reelection to his New Jersey seat Tuesday against Republican state Sen. Joe Kyrillos. His campaign dismissed the story as a last-minute hit piece.

"It is disgusting that on a day when New Jerseyans are focused on responding to one of the worst disasters to ever hit the state, Joe Kyrillos and the right wing smear machine are peddling lies about Bob Menendez," Menendez’s campaign manager, Michael Soliman said.

"Let’s be clear: the accusations Kyrillos and his friends in the right wing media are peddling are absolutely false. This unsubstantiated, untrue attack is a new low, and we hope that Kyrillos will pull his campaign out of the gutter and join us and other leaders in helping get this state back on its feet," Soliman added.

The story and an accompanying webcam video posted on the Daily Caller’s website rely on the accounts of two prostitutes whose names were withheld and faces blocked by an egg-like shape.

Speaking through an interpreter, the prostitutes complained about Menendez's treatment during an Easter week trip. The story notes that Menendez has been a frequent visitor to the Dominican Republican, staying at the home of his friend and campaign donor, Salomon Melgen. The piece also states that Melgen "appears to have lent" the senator his plane several times.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee suggested in a statement Thursday that Menendez may have violated ethics or campaign finance laws, but did not elaborate.

“There is a simple way for Senator Menendez to begin addressing these questions, and that is by releasing his schedule and travel records related to Easter Week of this year, as well as the other dates in question,” NRSC Executive Director Rob Jesmer said in a statement.

An aide to Kyrillos echoed that demand and called the allegations “deeply disturbing.”
