Learning Prompt

The Nourishing Poem

A Creative Exercise Inspired by Nikki Giovanni’s poem “Bay Leaves”

In celebration of the poetry of Nikki Giovanni, this prompt explores what and who nourishes us; how we can in turn nourish others; and how poems can be both a place and means of nourishment.

Your poem can either explore your memories of cooking, or the experience of cooking. You are invited, if possible, to create a meal, either by yourself or with others, and compose your poem as you cook. If you are able to write while cooking, take time to smell and taste each ingredient, making notes on what you observe, and using those notes to compose images in your poem.

Prep Work

Read Nikki Giovanni’s poem “Bay Leaves” several times to yourself, or with others.

Questions to consider, on your own in writing, or in discussion with others:

  • How did you learn (or not learn) to cook?
  • What food “rules” or traditions from your childhood do you continue to follow? What rules or traditions do you break, modify, or transform?
  • What nourishes you?

Assignment:

Write a poem that uses cooking, recipes, and food that explores what nourishes you and your communities. Write the poem as a list of instructions, like a recipe, to pass down your knowledge of nourishment to others.
