Old Glasgow became severely overcrowded in the 1840s thanks to rapid industrialisation which caused country-dwelling workers to move into the city as well as large-scale immigration from Ireland.

INTELLECTUAL, Board of Housing: House shortages were problems during the Industrial Revolution because it brought overpopulation upon Britain. Housing became rare and expensive, resulting in extremely overcrowded and poor conditions.
