Types of pencils

HB pencils, B pencils, and H pencils are all different forms of graphite pencils labeled with letters and numbers with each letter and number signifying different degrees of hardness or softness.

There is no one kind of pencil that is best for every kind of sketching but I will do my best to explain some of the benefits and problems of using the different pencil grades. Hopefully this will help you choose the right tools for each task.

We explain what pencil lead grades mean, with recommended uses and examples of each grade. If you're not sure how a #2 pencil relates to an HB pencil, or what the difference is between 6H and 6B, this is where you should start.

Regular pencils, even though they have the same color, can show different shades of grey. Some of them make semi-transparent lines, others are saturated and thick. The brightness of your drawing depends not only on how hard you press on the pencil but also on how soft or hard the pencil is. 5-Minute Crafts has learned more about the markings on pencils and we’re going to tell you what the letters “H” and “B” on them mean.

Similarly to how your brush's size will restrict the level of detail you can get in a painting, finely rendered drawings are a result of finely sharpened charcoal or graphite pencils. With a little practice and a bit of patience, you can turn any pencil into a high quality artist's tool.
