The word 'soma' comes from Greek word, meaning 'body'. Somatic cells form the body of a multicellular organism, but gametes (egg/sperm) are not produced by such cells. Meiosis takes place within a small number of reproductive cells/germ cells which give rise to gametes. Hence somatic cells are not involved in inheritance. ()
