Eudyptes schlegeli, Royal Penguin. The largest crested penguin, with a diagnostic whitish face. Only breeds on Macquarie Island; occasionally seen off of New Zealand’s subantarctic islands. Note bright yellow, orange, and black plumes. Easily distinguished from Macaroni Penguin by whitish face, and from Chinstrap Penguin by crests. Like most seabirds they are colonial, nesting in scrapes on the ground up to a mile inland. They feed on krill, small fish, and small amounts of squid.
