The jewel Mary wears may be the one sent to her by Philip of Spain prior to their marriage. According to one contemporary account it was, "a great diamond with a large pearl pendant, one of the most beautiful pieces ever seen in the world"

This was painted at a time when Elizabeth and her sister enjoyed a friendly relationship, prior the days when it would become incredibly strained on grounds of religion and politics (and to some degree parentage).
