One of the longest living types of trees, oaks can survive upwards of a millennium. With over 600 different species, all varieties have enormous trunks, branches, showy bark, and acorns with cup-like caps. Since they mature into large trees with extremely wide canopies they are best suited for homes with large yards.

The "Big Tree" is 1 of the most famous live oaks in the world. It was named Texas State Champion Virginia Live Oak (Quercus virginiana) in 1969,  retained that title until 2003, when a larger tree was discovered in Brazoria County, Texas.  It is thought to be one of the largest in the United States.  At Goose Island State Park; over 1000 years old,  has a trunk circumference over 35 feet.
