French resistance aesthetic

Joel Bellviure, the main colorizer at Cassowary Colorizations, started this project out of a desire to learn through historical rediscovery.

Mobilisé en 1939, Doisneau retrouve à son retour un Paris occupé où il va user de mille expédients pour subvenir à ces besoins. La presse étant quasi inexistante, il réalise quelques publicités, assure une série de portraits de scientifiques à la demande de Maximilien Vox. Son activité est également souterraine puisqu’il fabrique, tout au long de ces sombres années, de faux papiers pour la Résistance. Il réussit néanmoins à illustrer quelques aspects de la vie quotidienne : rationnement…

Resistenza partigiana, Partisan Resistance, were pro-Allied Italians during WWII. The Partisans were responsible for finding and executing Mussolini. There were many different groups of Partisans with different political slants - socialist, anarchist, apolitical, Catholic etc. As with the French Resistance, women were an instrumental part of the success of these forces, holding high positions of authority and fighting along side their brothers. Another hero of the French Resistance during World War II and decorated for saving the lives of U.S. soldiers shot down behind enemy lines was Micheline Blum-Picard. Only eighteen-years-old when she first became involved in the Resistance, Blum-Picard started by carrying messages taped to her back and then progressed to photographing inside factories damaged by bombing raids By D-Day, however, she was carrying a rifle, a pistol, and a hand grenade wherever she went.
