Fauvism was an art movement from the 20th century which provided interesting developments in the use of color, brushwork and abstraction. It was founded by a small group of French artists which included Henri Matisse, André Derain, Georges Braque and Maurice de Vlaminck. Fauvism was the first avant-garde art movement of the 20th Century. Spearheaded by a trio of young, Paris-based painters – Henri Matisse, André Derain and Maurice de Vlaminck – it was characterised by intense, expressive, non-naturalistic colour, along with loose brushwork and simplified forms.
