The Vedic Science Behind Eating With Your Hands? | unikolom

We often wonder why do we eat with our hands. Why not chopsticks, or forks? But there is a Vedic science behind it. According to Ayurveda, we use our hands because of the five elements within the fingers. Eating with hands transforms food and makes it digestible even before it reaches the mouth. Eating with hands feeds both body and mind.

EATING WITH YOUR HAND... The ritual of eating with the hands in India is very popular even out of India amongst Indian descendants. Is there a reason why we do this? Oh yes. Believe it or not. This is actually a "RITUAL" using what we call as "Mudra" Well, what is a "Mudra"? Hence it is believed that when the fingers consisting of the 5 elements come into contact with the food entering the mouth, it benefits the body and health and increases the value of the food. Quite interesting, but this topic has always been intriguing to me, since eating habits with hands is normally found mostly in the Indian sub continent. Each country has different culture and cuisines. The method of preparation and method of eating them is also different. For example, people in western countries eat food with spoon and fork and in south east Asian countries with chopsticks. I have seen people from west, watching our Indian counterparts with awe when eating with hands. When western folk marry into south Asian families, one of the first things they get to grips with is how to eat our ancestral food. About 40 years ago, my sister married a bloke called Derek who got into everyone’s good books by eating rice and curry by hand. More recently, my eldest nephew married an Italian woman who also quickly picked up the joy of picking up your food with your fingers.
