USAF 8th TFW CO Colonel Robin Olds with 555th TFS Pilots, Vietnam, May 4th, 1967 [Robin Olds (July 14, 1922 – June 14, 2007) was an American fighter pilot and general officer in the U.S. Air Force. He was a "triple ace", with a combined total of 16 victories in World War II and the Vietnam War. He retired in 1973 as a brigadier general. In addition, in 1985 he was enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame for his All-American football career as an Offensive & Defensive Tackle at West Point]
A 555th Tactical Fighter Squadron F-4D Panthom II deployed to Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand. On Jan. 8, 1964, the 555 TFS was activated at MacDill Air Force Base, Fla., and was the first Air Force unit outfitted with the F-4. In December 1964, the unit deployed in support of operations in Southeast Asia, and “Triple Nickel” jets represented the first Air Force F-4s in Vietnam.
