72K views · 1.9K reactions | #1. Not applying enough stain Wood absorbs water-based stain differently than oil-based stain. It may take more product to saturate the surface and keep it wet. You know you have enough when you can write your initials in it. If the stain is drying too quickly, immediately apply more to re-wet the surface. After 15-30 seconds, wipe away the excess.  #2. Using the Wrong Applicator Picking the right applicator will allow you to work quickly and efficiently. When staining wood, follow this rule: The larger the surface, the larger the applicator.  For small, flat surfaces, use a foam brush. For contoured surfaces, using a foam brush can slow things down. A good-quality bristle brush will make application easier and faster. For large surfaces, use a staining pad, pad applicator, or roller. Comment ✨️ STAIN ✨️ and I'll send the link to the applicator I'm using straight to your inbox! #3. Not Using Absorbent Rags or Towels to Remove Stain Cheap paper towels and t-shirt rags can ruin a water-based stain job. They don't absorb enough stain, they just push it around. Instead, use high-quality absorbent paper towels or cotton terry cloths to remove the excess. Keep your pressure light and even, and make the final wipe with the grain. . . . #savedbydesign #furniture #furnituredesign #homeinspo #homedecor #woodworking #paintedfurniture | Jennifer Beck | Rick James · Give It To Me Baby

a dresser with the words bleach dresser makeover on it's side
5.4K views · 1K reactions | This dresser had been with a single owner for over 50 years as it was the first piece of furniture they got when they got married! My client grabbed it out of my inventory and knew a stripped look was what she wanted! Be sure to LIKE & SAVE this post for later and hit that FOLLOW button for more furniture flips and makeovers! To strip and bleach this I did the following steps: 🌟 Cleaned and removed all hardware 🌟 Used my carbide scrapper and my favorite chemical stripped @kleanstripproducts to get off existing finish 🌟 Sanded with 120 grit after stripping 🌟 There was existing hardware ghosting marks left over after stripping. To get rid of them I used A & B bleach all over and let fully dry! This bleached the wood removing the hardware marks that had been there for 50 years 😳 🌟 After bleaching I used a 120 block to lightly go over the drawers again to prep for paint wash 🌟 For my paint wash I used my favorite color Leatherwood by @wiseowlpaint and diluted it in a 1 to 6 water mixture. Spread that all over and wipe off 🌟 Once dry, use the top coat of your choice to protect and seal it. Added new adjustable hardware so we didn’t have to drill any new holes and she was ready for her new home! If you want the links to any products used comment BLEACH and I will send the links straight to your dm! #furnituremakeover #customfurniture #furnitureflip #diy #bleached | Lismore Lane | Furniture Flips & DIY | Modest Mouse · Float On

Save this for later! Repairing veneer isn’t as difficult as long as you have the right products. Mohawk epoxy, blending sticks, and toner are my favorite for veneer repair.

**If you work inside make sure you have a well ventilated area and wear a respirator. Prep your area by covering walls and carpet in case you have overspray (I didn’t this time because I am painting and replacing the flooring).

Movers** 😆

a person cutting carrots on top of a table
4.8M views · 51K reactions | makeover of an entryway table | Stripping old paint - Extreme furniture makeover of an entryway table! | By Flipped by Abby | I was gifted this vintage entry table because the roof was leaking on the house and they needed to get rid of the furniture Asap. If I didn't take it, it was just going to be thrown away. I knew it was worth saving because it's solid wood but it has this residue of brown paint that needs to be removed. I laid down a plastic sheet from the dollar store and some gloves to protect my hands because the chemical stripper that I'm using is very toxic. I like using this product because it's really effective and the natural strippers just don't seem to get the job done the same. To apply the stripper, I just use a cheap Dollar Store brush so I could throw it away when I'm done. I let the chemical stripper sit for a little bit too long and it dried up so it didn't come off very well the first round so I just went in and applied another layer. The chemical stripper does a good job at removing the varnish on top of the wood so that it cuts down on your sanding time. However, it's not going to remove the stain that's in the wood. The sander will have to do that. Once I finished scraping most of the chemical stripper off, took some mineral spirits to clean off the gooey residue. This will help to avoid gunking up my sandpaper and wasting money. For sanding large flat surfaces, a random orbital sander always does the job super fast. I started out with 80 grit sandpaper and then I worked my way all the way up to 220 grit until all the stain was removed. To sand these curved edges and cracks, I used my contour sanding block and just attached it to my detail sander. It's a little hack that works great. Before sanding raw wood, you always want to sand with the wood grain so that you get the most even finish possible. I mixed about three paints water to one part tan paint and then I cut my maker stain pad to size so that I could apply the wash with it. You can see that when I wet this wood, it turns sort of orange so this tan wash is just going to neutralize those undertones. If I were to just seal it as is, it would turn out that orange color. I quickly realized I was supposed to use a piece of tape to get the fuzzies off of this pad before you it. I used this water-based stain in the color early American to add a slightly darker shade to the table top. Since this wood was slightly weathered from all the wear and tear, I thought this shade would look nice and rustic. This stain pad was perfect because it's absorbent like foam but it's soft like a microfiber cloth. I cleaned the base of this dresser with crud cutter to remove any grease that won't allow my paint to stick. Then I scuff sanded the entire piece with 220 grit sandpaper just to get that extra adhesion. For the paint color, I chose Milange Apothecary gray which I think paired nicely with the wood on top. I chose the mineral line of paint so that I could distress it when I'm done to keep that vintage charm the piece originally had. I sealed the paint with hemp oil to get a nice soft velvety finish. I sealed the top with a water-based polyacrylic so it's extra durable for heavy items that might be sat on top of it. The great thing about the water-based product is that it won't yellow over time. As a reminder, here's where we on this piece and here's the finished result. The paint wash and stain was exactly what I had in mind and this old brownish red paint is now a neutral gray that would look great in anybody's home. an organized pantry with lots of jars and pans
613 reactions · 87 shares | If you are working with a small pantry like me and don’t know where to turn for extra space, remember that doors too can make practical storage. The 4 tier wire shelf unit I had for years on my door was no longer enough- either I had to buy a second one for the bottom half or start over. So I went hunting for a wood spice rack, but quickly realized how expensive they can get- $175 or $400 for full length, and I couldn’t justify not DIYing it. Would you believe me if I told, I built this similar rack for 1/4 of the original price? I mean, that’s a win! If you ever find yourself wanting to dip your toes in the DIY waters but don’t know where to start, perhaps a door spice rack could be the one that opens the door (pun intended😆) to a world of reno possibilities. | Frinet Mendoza | Becky Hill · My Heart Goes (La Di Da)

a person is pointing at the top of a wooden post with buttons on it and text that reads, what is your favorite way of striping detailed pieces of furniture?
11K views · 2.2K reactions | This for sure is my most used/favorite way of stripping detailed pieces of furniture! While yes soda blasting is messy, putting the piece on a tarp makes for pretty easy cleanup! And compared to other methods it actually is super beginner friendly ! If it does get on my skin, its just baking soda so easily washes off with water (and makes my skin soft too apparently!) I have a machine from Amazon and one from harbor freight and love them both! lemme know if you have any questions in the comments!
