Union Pacific gas turbine X-18 is one of thirty 8,500HP locomotives built by GE. At 166 feet long and almost 850,000 pounds these are by far the largest locomotives ever built. You can see the tender which carried the bunker oil for the turbine curve off to the left in the image.

Despite the sun, this was a very cold winter's afternoon down at the rail-yard. I had actually asked for and was given permission by some rail employees to get close and shoot these locomotives in action.... Honestly, I don't think the guys who told me it was okay to stand on tracks in front of moving trains coming right at me had the proper authority to do so. Been there and done this too many times to know permission is never granted by the railroads for this stuff... but I wasn't gonna…
