Growing frustrated with the idea that progressive design meant premium prices, we decided that to better serve riders, a different approach was needed.

Review: Privateer 141 - The Adjustable Wrench of Trail Bikes
A couple of points here. Gen 2 bikes are not made in the same factory as Gen 1 bikes. We also build our frames for performance and durability above anything else. For example, forging is an expensive process, but we use custom-forged one-piece rockers for both the 141 and 161 (they are not the same rocker). We also ensure our bearing surfaces are machines after heat treating (not before, unlike some other manufacturers), and this ensures perfect bearing alignment and longer bearing life. We don't try and save pennies here, and there when making our bikes; we focus on what makes for a durable, easy-to-work-on, performance-driven product. We would argue that Gen 2 is a great value. Our frameset has all the adjustability and features you could want; it ships with a custom-tuned Fox shock, headset, seat clamp, ISCG mount, and 2 mech hangers for £1889, that's £490 more affordable than a similar frameset.

@baldybrucetires: We ship Gen 2 framesets with 2 mech hangers so that you can always have one spare with you if you need it on the trail, and customers can always add more when purchasing should they need them.

@90sMTBEnjoyer: Both great bikes, but the Airdrop doesn't have the same adjustability as the 141 and the Raaw is also more expensive than the 141 with the Float X, £2379 (once the headset and spare parts are added which come as standard on a 141 frame) vs £1889.

Review: Privateer 141 - The Adjustable Wrench of Trail Bikes
@Takaya94: Hi sorry for the delay in reply. Gen 2 was designed to ensure longer service life, durability and continued performance season after season. To do this, we went for 42mm full compliment Enduro Max bearings, which are significantly larger than most bearings used by other brands and naturally weigh a lot more. We also use a forged one-piece rocker, which ensures alignment and the forged process ensures strength, but it does also come with a weight penalty. We also use thicker-walled tubing in areas of high stress to ensure your Gen 2 will last. It might not be clear from the photos above, but the seat tube is also ovalized (and machined) to give more material and strength in this area. All of this does add up to more weight, but we feel the increased durability and peace of mind are worth it.

@wyorider: A couple of things to point out here. Gen 2 bikes are NOT built in the same factory as Gen 1 bike were. We're not sure where this idea of cheaper materials comes from either. There are a lot of forged parts on the Gen 2 bike and forging is actually an expensive process but we do it as it ensures the material retains its natural strength.

Review: Privateer 141 - The Adjustable Wrench of Trail Bikes
@motardnoob: When we designed the Gen 2, the move to the new design meant we were able to give our riders space for a bottle in all frame sizes, something the Gen 1 bike struggled with. The new design also frees space for a tool mount under the downtube while offering a huge amount of standover height. We also found that the updated toptube design from our prototype frames lasted 3x longer in fatigue tests too. We felt all of those benefits were valuable to dedicated riders and racers.

Nail on the head :D Our complete bikes are built to offer durability and performance ride after ride. We could have easily dropped the weight speccing lighter tyres, but swapping those out to something with a tougher (heavier) casing would probably be the first 'upgrade' a rider would make. Giving riders sorted parts right out of the box means you can enjoy your bike from day one and any money you would spend on upgrades can be used for uplifts, race entry, and and days at the bike park. The frameset only option, does also give riders the ability to build up a lighter bike if they wanted.
