- Bas Out 6-8 Weeks After Crash In Australia; Will Attend Kokanee Crankworx In Whistler -

For the first time in his high-flying, competitive biking career Kona Clump Team’s Paul Basagoitia has broken a bone. His right collar bone to be exact. The injury, which Bas sustained while riding and jumping in Australia, is the first major set-back of the young riders’ career and will sideline him for 6-8 weeks, according to physicians.“I was super bummed and disappointed of myself,” says Bas of his collar-bone- breaking crash. “After a few days at home, I finally calmed down and realized that this is all part of the game.”

Bas’s accident occurred in Australia while filming for NWD 9. The crew was filming at the famous dirt pipe Down Under – which is one of the most insane dirt pipes in the world. It’s basically a ski/snowboard halfpipe littered with hips and wall rides. With a few days of intermittent rain showers dampening the crew’s hopes of filming, the sun finally reared its head and it was on. But the dirt pipe was still slippery.

“It was supposed to be the only sunny day for the next week,” says Bas. “I felt a little uncomfortable riding the pipe in that condition, but I had to get something done. After a few runs I felt pretty dialed on the pipe and I started unleashing some of my bigger tricks.”
After multiple sessions of hitting one of the hip features, it began to develop some ruts on the lip. “I tried to hit the hip one more time before we took off, but it was the biggest mistake of my career so far,” says Bas. “The lip shot me sideways and right over the landing to flat. It wasn't the hardest crash I have ever taken, but it gave me my first broken bone – I knew I was in trouble when I couldn’t lift my right arm.”

Although Bas will not compete in his favorite contest – the Kokanee Crankworx in Whistler Aug. 9-17 – he will be on-hand signing autographs at the Kona tent and cheering on his compadres.

I love the way people think that saying something before a run will affect the outcome in some way. How many times have people said those same words and not had anything bad happen, including myself everytime I take a last run. Give it some thought.

I'm a physio....for the record your clavicle holds your scapula (shoulder blade) and humerus (arm) to the rest of your skeleton. Without its continuity you can't use your upper extremity. It's a crappy injury b/c there are no clear advantages to having surgery unless its comminuted (or splintered). A sling doesn't increase your return any quicker either. Basically you just have to let it heal and NOT push it too fast!! Or you WILL have problems later in life...I see it everyday.
I'm bummed for Bas and Metzger (transition bro/pro)....get well soon gents!!!

broke my c-bone last thanksgiving. took me a waited 8 weeks and still flet like ass the first ride out. it gives me fits now and again. plus i lest the plate in. i am no pussy either, i played 3 seains of club lacrosse with a particlly torn acl. when i saw 3 seasons i mean basiclly 3 years spring summer fall and indoor in the winter. wqas really surprised at how long it took to heal completely. these guys are not stupid and will fully recover before they ride again. if becuase you got something to prove by riding after only 2 weeks you are stupid. i guess you are a man among boys. plus you may not have to think about things like a house payment or bills. so go get'em tough guy. you rule. and we all suck. you are the man

man I broke my jaw this summer riding... I was out for 6 weeks too without riding or eating but once you get back on the bike you realize why you go through the pain and suffering and that it is just all part of the game. It was also the first bone I've ever broken. Pain is temporary GLORY LASTS FOREVER

Ive broke my right collar bone 2 months ago, and its not fun...
Even now, I cant wash my teeth with my right arm.
but when i got on bike(after 2 weeks) It was... ride of my life, even when I couldnt use my right arm... the feel of speed was unbelievable.
So stay cool Paul, I wish you fast recovery!!!

that sucks. yeah well, he could go riding after 2 weeks, but that aint smart if you ever wants to ride without pain or dissabilities. If he has plates to hold it together, he could ride after a view weeks, but sometimes the plates must come out again, so that's another three weeks. if he aint got plates, than he better take those 6 weeks or so. my brother, KONA Grass Roots rider Kevin Katinas, had a quatruple heel brake in februari, he was out for 3 months if i remember correctly, so could be worse, but it sucks everytime i guess. P.B. must be able to throw a line after a view weeks though, have a good catch!

Right on. I'll be there telling him to get the hell better!

to bad he broke his collarbone, but i broke my foot a week ago, and you should be happy that it wasnt my neck or back, so hell be on his bike in a few weeks, and its stupid to ride 2 weeks after when they said 6 weeks, beacause if you break it again ill be another 6 weks STUPID DIRT KID!

the bone sets inside of 2 weeks for a healthy guy/gal. probably one of the most painful injuries besides something catastrophic. NWD 9 is gonna but sick, check out these 20" guys riding the Aussie dirt pipe!

did mine last year, with a bunch of other stuff as well....ribs, shoulder...internal bleeding....it sucks.
  • 0 1
Collar bones are not serious at all... They heal on there own, hardly ever need surgery, don't need any physio afterwards, and usually at 6 weeks its 100%
