Rice Business Innovations System (RiceBIS) communities in Tiaong, Quezon, are poised to be the first suppliers of pigmented rice products, including white rice, at the UPLB Techno Hub One-Stop-Shop (UPLB THOSS).

In a recent showcase event led by Gregorio Garde, president of the Sintorisan-Behia SWISA Farmers Association, Tiaong RiceBIS communities presented their products to officials from UPLB THOSS, the University of the Philippines Los Baños Business Affairs Office, UPLB Alumni Association, and Department of Trade and Industry-Laguna.

Garde highlighted the association’s mission to fulfill the growing demand for nutritious rice from health-conscious consumers.

Hub manager Cheree Mae Escoton noted the rising demand for pigmented rice, which is rich in antioxidants and phytonutrients that can prevent cancer. It has also been used for strengthening kidney function, treating anemia, promoting blood circulation, removing blood stasis, and treating diabetes in traditional Chinese medicine.

Escoton and the screening committee were impressed with the farmers’ dedication and the high quality of their products, aligning with UPLB THOSS’s mission to support local products. These products cater to local and international students, residents, visitors, tourists, and the scientific community.

“We’re grateful for this opportunity that we could be successful entrepreneurs. This collaboration not only helps us reach new markets but also empowers our community to innovate and grow,” Garde said.
