The Minnesota Vikings made one last maneuver to assure they got their guy at No. 10 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, moving up from No. 11 in a trade with the New York Jets to pick Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy. The selection was quickly followed by McCarthy’s new Vikings jersey being listed on the team’s Fanatics store.

McCarthy had perhaps no bigger fan than former Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, who left for the LA Chargers and heaped more praise on McCarthy after he led the Wolverines to a national title last season. Harbaugh also had incentive to drive up the price for quarterbacks as his Chargers sat at No. 5 overall and ultimately stayed put at that spot and picked Notre Dame offensive lineman Joe Alt.

McCarthy showed athleticism and moxie as Michigan’s two-year starter, but also engineered an offense that didn’t ask him to win games with his arm. Even so, McCarthy completed 72.3 percent of his passes last season, averaged 9.0 yards per attempt and threw 22 touchdown passes to four interceptions. He figures to be the favorite to win Minnesota’s starting job after the team lost Kirk Cousins to Atlanta in free agency.
