Two months ago, Windows 10 market share hit 70% for the first time since late 2023 as Windows 11 saw a slow slide throughout Q1. But Microsoft's latest OS appears poised for a comeback, as Statcounter says it's approaching 30% global market share.
Windows 11 has now seen growth for two consecutive months and is currently installed on 29.71% of PCs. Windows 10, meanwhile, has dipped to 66%. That's still higher than Microsoft would like, especially considering that Windows 10 hits its end of life in October 2025, but those numbers are at least moving in the right direction now.
The rest of Microsoft's operating systems have held mostly steady, with less than 3% of users still on Windows 7 and some scattered PCs chugging along with Windows 8 and Windows XP.
Though Microsoft offers Windows 10 users a free upgrade to Windows 11, compatibility requirements have kept some people with older PCs from upgrading to the newer OS. Some may also be wary of the full Copilot AI integration on Windows 11, not to mention the controversy with its upcoming Recall feature and a host of other less desirable features. Still, it has its benefits and earns 4.5 out of 5 rating and an Editors' Choice award from PCMag.
Redmond has upped the ante in recent months with full-screen ads to get Windows 10 users to migrate to Windows 11. It will also only extend Windows 10 security updates beyond October 2025 if you pay for it. By then, PC users may be ready for a laptop or desktop upgrade anyway.
