Apple Extends iWork to iPhone and iPod Touch

Three Mac apps formerly only available on the iPad—Keynote, Pages, and Numbers—bring basic software to more iOS users.

May 31, 2011

Apple today released three new productivity apps for mobile users based on its iWork software: Keynote, Numbers, and Pages. While a version of has been around for some time, the new apps bring much of the same functionality to iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, as well as third- and fourth-generation iPod touch devices.

iWork is Apple's own solution for creating and editing presentations, spreadsheets, and word-processing documents, and has long been understood by Mac users as an alternative to Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, and Word (although it supports a variety of file formats, so there's some ability to share documents across platforms). With Keynote, Pages, and Numbers, you can import and export documents from iWork for Mac and Microsoft Office, print documents, and choose from existing themes and templates when drafting new documents.

Some new improvements since the iWork for iPad version was released are that thumbnail images of documents are now used to help mobile users find files on their small screens. Files can be organized or grouped into folders using standard iOS gestures. The Numbers app also includes an intelligent keyboard designed specifically for building and editing spreadsheets.

As with many productivity apps, Keynote, Pages, and Numbers allow users to not only create, edit, and organize content, but also share documents with others via email.

Each app is currently priced at $9.99 each for new users, although existing customers of iWork for iPad can download a free update.
