Female superheroes program

Magdalena Lamarre, professor of History and Sociology at Miami-Dade College, will lead a presentation on “Female Superheroes: What are Their Real Powers,” from 2 to 3 p.m. July 7 at the W.T. Bland Public Library in Mount Dora, 1995 N. Donnelly St.

Female superheroes have filled the pages of comic books from the start, but their portrayal has been a subject of controversy; the program will cover how women are perceived in popular culture through the medium. The program is free and open to area residents ages 16 and up.

Learn all about bees

The Astor County Library, 54905 Alco Road, will have an A-Z About Bees class from 1 to 2 p.m. July 9, led by David Westervelt, vice-president of Bees Beyond Borders, a Florida-based non-profit dedicated to training, education and inspections. The free class will cover bees, beekeeping and botany.

Water Wednesday program for kids

The Lake County Water Authority will host another Water Wednesday program for children in pre-K through fifth grade at 10 a.m. July 10 at Hickory Point Recreational Park, 27341 State Road 19, Tavares.

Participants will learn about the impact everyday lives have on the environment. Coloring activity pages will be provided. Space is limited to 15 children. Reservations are required.

Movie night and health class

First Presbyterian Church of Mount Dora, 222 W. Sixth Ave., will host a screening of the movie “I Heard the Bells,” at 6:30 p.m. July 10.

The 2022 movie follows the true story of the beloved Christmas Carol penned by poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The movie is free and open to the public. 

The church is also offering an eight-week faith-based wellness plan for whole-person health from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursdays beginning July 11 through Aug. 29. The interactive CREATION Life class, created by Advent Health, will be taught by Dr. Brenda Loyal and will focus on eight guiding principles. It is free and open to the public. Registration is required.

Volunteer at bird and butterfly survey

Volunteers are welcome to participate in a quarterly bird and butterfly survey at Pasture Reserve in Groveland at 7:30 a.m. July 13.

Staff from Lake County’s Parks and Trails division will lead the survey. Participants should wear appropriate clothing for summer weather and bring water. The reserve is located at 5144 Lake Erie Road.

Military collector show in Mount Dora

The Florida Military Collector Show will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 13 at Renninger’s Antique Center, 20651 U.S. Highway 441, Mount Dora.

The show is one of the largest in the southeast and features more than 100 tables of military collectibles, and free appraisals. There is no admission charge and parking is free.

Learn about summer stars at nature center

Trout Lake Nature Center will host The Stars of Summer program, detailing what stars are visible in the night sky during the summer months in Florida, at 1:30 p.m. July 13.

Led by Mike Ryan, the retired planetarium director for Lake County Schools, the workshop will include stories of the constellations. Each participant will receive a star chart to take home and continue learning.

The Center is located at 520 E. County Road 44, Eustis. Entry fee is $5 per vehicle, but TLNC members get in free.

Elections supervisor discusses misinformation in politics

Lake County Supervisor of Elections D. Alan Hays will discuss the Dangers of Misinformation in Politics from 10 to 11 a.m. July 14 at the Universalist Congregation of Lake County at 1235 Mount Homer Road, Eustis.

The event is free and open to the public and was originally scheduled for June 23. Before being elected to his present position in 2016, Hays served in the Florida Legislature for 12 years, first as a representative and then as a senator.

AARP Smart Driver courses

A two-day, six-hour AARP Driver Safety program, Smart Driver course, which helps participants refine their skills and develop safer and smarter driving habits, will take place from 9 a.m. to noon July 16 and 18 at the Allen Harden Funeral Home, 1800 N. Donnelly St., Mount Dora, and from 1 to 4 p.m. July 29 and 31 at the Leesburg Senior Center, 1211 Penn St. 

Drivers ages 50 and up may be eligible for insurance discounts upon completion of the course. The cost is $20 for AARP members and $25 for nonmembers, which includes workbooks and a completion certificate. Payment must be made by check to AARP. No cash or credit cards will be accepted.

Stroll along the bluff

The Lake County Water Authority will host “Stroll along the bluff” at 9 a.m. July 6 at Sabal Bluff Reserve, 1259 Leesburg Mobile Road., Leesburg. The 55-acre reserve is one of the stops along the county’s Blueway Trail and is adjacent to the Bourlay Historic Nature Park. The event is free and open to the public, but is limited to 15 participants via reservation.

Exploration hike

A Lake County Parks and Trails staff member will lead an exploration hike of Ferndale Preserve, 19220 County Road 455, Montverde, at 8 a.m. July 5. Participants should bring water and wear appropriate clothing for the summer heat.

The nearly 200-acre preserve is located on the western shore of Lake Apopka. The hike is free and open to the public.

Dulcimer society holds music session

The Mount Dora Dulcimer Society will meet for a music session from 10 a.m. to noon July 6 at the W.T. Bland Public Library, 1995 N. Donnelly St., Mount Dora.

Area acoustic instrument musicians, including violin, guitar, autoharp and ukulele players are welcome. The session is free and open to the public.

Mount Dora Community trust partners with Habitat for Humanity

The Mount Dora Community Trust has partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter and the city of Mount Dora to invest in revitalizing the city’s northeast district through a $50,000 donation to Habitat’s Preservation and Repair program. 

The Community Trust’s donation provides access to Mount Dora’s CRA funds, unlocking matching dollars for a total of $100,000 available for critical repairs for four to six homes in the district. Through the Preservation and Repair program, cost-burdened homeowners are able to update their houses by receiving repairs to increase its safety, accessibility, and beauty.

The Northeast Community Redevelopment Agency s a public agency created in 1989 by the City Council at the request of neighborhood residents who wanted to revitalize the area.  

The sponsorship will also provide educational volunteer opportunities for local students across Lake and Sumter counties.  

Four critical home repair projects are in progress, with all repairs expected to be completed in the fall.

Eustis library programs

The Eustis Memorial Library, 120 N. Center St., is sponsoring a photography contest and seeking submissions of Eustis landmarks from area residents through Aug. 1.

The library will post the photos on its Facebook page, and professionally print, in poster-sized frames, the 12 pictures most “liked,” and display them in the library. To submit a photo, go to eustismemoriallibrary.org.

Ages 50-over men’s softball league seeks players

The Lakes League Men’s Softball League for ages 50 and over plays at 9 a.m. on Thursdays at Pear Park, 26701 U.S. Highway 27 in Leesburg.

Theater camp

First United Methodist Church of Mount Dora will host an Intergenerational Theater Camp July 8-13, with children ages four to 11 attending rehearsals from 6 to 7 p.m. nightly, and those ages 12 and up rehearsing from 6 to 9 p.m. each night at the church, 439 E. Fifth Ave.

A presentation of “Christmas in Bethlehem Gulch,” will take place at 3 p.m. July 13, with Christmas cookies and cocoa served afterward. The theater camp is free and open to the public; registration is required.
