Portland saw its first 100-degree day of the year Sunday besting the old record of 95 set in 2010 - and we’re not finished with record-setting heat yet.

The National Weather Service noted that Portland wasn’t the only hot spot as records were set in Vancouver (100, beating 97 set in 1920), Salem (103, beating 100 set in 1945), and in Eugene (103, besting 98 set in 1945).

The current daily records as recorded at Portland International Airport for July 8 and 9 show highs in the upper 90s. The region is still under an extreme heat warning until 10 p.m. July 9. Temps hotter than 100 are likely through Tuesday.

Portland will have another sunny and hot day Monday with a high of about 102. The possibility of reaching 105 is at about 40%.

After the very hot day, nighttime temps will not bring much relief as forecasters warn that it may be the “most brutal” of the overnight hours during this hot streak. Guidance shows that the chance of Portland’s inner eastside and St. Johns areas of not falling below 70 degrees is at 50-70%. Without sufficient overnight cooling people are unable to rest enough to recharge for another hot day. Those with health issues could find this stretch of heat unbearable. Tuesday should be the last of the extreme heat with highs near 105 degrees very possible especially in urban areas and in Salem and Eugene.

The weather service says strengthening onshore flow will bring some relief to much of the region overnight Tuesday and into Wednesday. But temperatures will still be well above average.

Wednesday should see a more than 10-degree drop in temps under sunny skies. Highs will “cool” to about 92 degrees.

Thursday’s forecast calls for sunny skies and temps more in line with mid-July when highs reach about 85 degrees.

The extended forecast shows warm days continuing into the weekend, and no rain is on the radar through Sunday.
