Portland Timbers, Thorns’ ‘Green is Gold’ charity match kicks off Wednesday night

The Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns will come together to play a special charity match that will benefit environmental organizations.

The Timbers and Thorns will play in the “Green Is Gold” fundraiser Wednesday night to support and raise awareness of the Nature Conservancy and Keep Oregon Green organizations. The match, which is free to attend, will begin at 7 p.m. at Providence Park. Fans are encouraged to make a donation.

The Timbers and Thorns will play a co-ed scrimmage against each other. Team Gold, consisting of Sophia Smith, Evander, Becky Sauerbrunn and Diego Valeri, will face Team Green, which has Diego Chara, Christine Sinclair, Jack Jewsbury and Sam Coffey.

The match will consist of two, 30-minute halves with a 15-minute halftime. Should be the match be tied at the end, a winner will be decided in a penalty kick shootout.
