Residents in the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood in Southeast Portland reported seeing a man who was fatally shot in Raymond Park Monday.

Portland Police identified the man as 22-year-old Geavauntae Sherman.

Lisa Hungary was startled by loud cracks in the neighborhood around 10 p.m. – noises she hoped were fireworks, she said. The screams that came next clued her in that something much worse had happened.

“Two gentlemen were walking along the road right outside my window,” Hungary said. “One of them was screaming in pain.”

The two men got into a car and drove away quickly, Hungary said. It was too dark for her to identify them.

Officers responded just after 10 p.m. and learned that a man who had been shot was helped into a car that had left the scene. Police found the man in the car near Southeast 122nd Avenue and Division Street, police said. The man died at the scene.

Chelsea Martin, another resident on the 11800 block of Southeast Liebe Street where the shooting took place, saw people throwing a party in the park that evening.

There was a barbecue, balloons and a large group in the park around 9:45 p.m., which is normal for the area, according to Martin. She could hear them outside, and saw around 20 people, including children. She also heard shots around 10 p.m. followed by screaming.

She heard someone yelling for their brother, and watched as the panicked group rushed from the park, Martin said.

Everything at the party was left until the morning.

“It was so unsettling to see it all there today,” Martin said.

No arrests have been made and police have not identified any suspects.

For Martin, it’s going to take some time for things to feel normal again.

“I couldn’t believe it,” she said. “It’s been a hard day, and I’m still in shock. It’s going to be a while before I recover.”

Earlier Monday, another man was found dead in Northeast Portland on the 3200 block of Northeast 81st Avenue. Police did not say how the victim died, but residents reported hearing gunshots around 1:30 a.m., and seeing police in the parking lot of Sunshine Health and Hospitality Services.

These deaths mark the 42nd and 43rd homicides in Portland so far in 2022. Portland saw 92 homicides in 2021.
