Trail Blazers’ Deandre Ayton, Bahamas national basketball team fall short of reaching Olympics

The Bahamas men’s national basketball team, led by Portland Trail Blazers center Deandre Ayton, lost 86-78 Sunday to Spain in the qualifying finals to fall short of reaching the Paris Summer Olympics 2024.

Ayton scored 17 points with 14 rebounds in the loss in Valencia, Spain. In four games, Ayton put up 19.5 points with 11.8 rebounds per contest. Buddy Hield led the Bahamas with 19 points in the loss to Spain.

Spain qualified for the Olympics for the seventh consecutive time, while the Bahamas have never made the field.

Spain guard Rudy Fernandez, who played for the Blazers from 2008-2010, will play in his record sixth Olympics.
