The Mississippi State Bulldogs went out and landed one of the biggest pitching prospects from the transfer portal. On Sunday evening, Virginia transfer pitcher Chase Hungate made the news official and committed to the Bulldogs. He announced the news on his Twitter page.

This season, Hungate was one of the best pitchers on the Cavaliers’ staff, posting a 7-2 overall record with a 3.74 ERA. He did that in 53 innings of work for UVA. Hungate also struck out 37 batters, while allowing 49 hits and three home runs. He spent the past two years with the Cavaliers and his first season with the VCU Rams. While with the Rams, he spent time with former MSU players in Conor Hujsak and Tyler Davis.

In 2021-2022 with the Rams, Hungate went 6-4, posting a 3.57 ERA in 63 innings of work. He also struck out 46 batters, while allowing three home runs on the season. In the 2022-2023 campaign with Virginia, the Abingdon, Virginia native posted a 5.76 ERA in 25 innings, finishing with a 3-0 record.

Virginia had another excellent season this year, making their way back to Omaha to the 2024 College World Series. The Cavaliers were the team that ended Mississippi State’s 2024 season in the Charlottesville Regional. The Bulldogs finished with a 40-23 overall record and a 17-13 record in the SEC.

And there’s no question Hungate was a massive, massive piece of UVA’s special run. He was one of the best pitchers on their staff and it’s certainly a big loss for the Cavaliers, but a big pickup for the Bulldogs.

Before college, Hungate enjoyed a prolific career at Abingdon High School (Abingdon, Virginia), where he led his team to state runner up finishes in 2018 and 2021. They also won the Regional Championships in 2018, 2019, and 2021. Hungate was a dynamic athlete, also earning first team all-state honors in basketball. An exceptional student, he also was named the school’s valedictorian in 2021.

His brother, Cade Hungate, was the Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Virginia before moving on to play for the Florida State Seminoles.
