How did NiJaree Canady, USA Softball Women's Elite Team fare at Japan All-Star Series?

The U.S. Women's Elite Team completed the 2024 Japan All-Star Series on Monday.

The world-ranked No. 1 Team USA was swept by No. 2 Japan in a three-game series that took place in three Japanese cities. Team USA suffered a 1-0 loss on Thursday, a 9-5 loss on Saturday and an 8-1 loss (six innings) on Monday.

Game 1: Kelly Maxwell, Team USA falls short in 1-0 loss to Japan

Team USA opened the three-game series on Thursday in Nagoya with a 1-0 loss to Japan.

Former OU and OSU softball pitcher Kelly Maxwell shined inside the circle. The recorded 11 strikeouts and only allowed two hits in 6 ⅓ innings pitched.

But a pair of singles and a fielding error allowed Japan to score the lone run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, sealing a 1-0 win.

Game 2: NiJaree Canady, Lexi Kilfoyl struggle in Team USA's 9-5 loss to Japan

Team USA had no answer for Japan's bats during a 9-5 loss in Fujinomiya on Saturday.

Team USA started NiJaree Canady, who was named USA Softball's Collegiate Player of the Year with Stanford this past season and is now in the transfer portal. She allowed three earned runs with two strikeouts in three innings pitched on Saturday.

Former OSU pitcher Lexi Kilfoyl also saw some time inside the circle, and she gave up two earned runs with one strikeout in four innings pitched. Former OU catcher Kinzie Hansen racked up two RBIs on 1-for-4 hitting, but Japan secured the 9-5 win.

Game 3: Japan completes sweep of Team USA with 8-1 win

Japan completed the sweep of Team USA on Monday with an 8-1 win (six innings) in Yokohama.

Canady got another start, although she allowed four earned runs with three strikeouts in 3 ⅔ innings pitched. She then got replaced by Kilfoyl, who surrendered three earned runs with one strikeout in two innings pitched.

Former Florida shortstop Skylar Wallace put Team USA on the board with a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough to prevent Japan from earning the run-rule victory.
