Chuck Bowman, R.W. McQuarters among inductees for Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2022

The Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame announced Monday its class of 2022 inductees. The six new hall of famers are Chuck Bowman (contributor); Lane Frost (rodeo); R.W. McQuarters (football); Wilcy Moore (baseball) Tinker Owens (football) and Lee Roy Smith (wrestling). 

Frost and Moore will be inducted posthumously.

The class of 2022 will be inducted on Aug. 1 at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. 

Chuck Bowman

The Ponca City native was a standout athlete who played football at OU over the 1954-57 seasons. After serving as a high school football coach, he guided Northeastern A&M Junior College to national championships in 1967 and 1969. Bowman spent 31 years with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes; he was named state director in 1973.

Lane Frost

Frost started winning rodeo events at age 10. By age 15, he was riding bulls. Frost was the 1980 bullriding champion at the Oklahoma Youth Rodeo Association. In 1981, he was crowned champion at the National High School Finals Rodeo. By age 19, the Atoka High School graduate was a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and went on to win several titles.

R.W. McQuarters

The Tulsa Washington and Oklahoma State alum was a football and basketball player. He played three years of basketball at OSU as well football, the latter of which led to an NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers, Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions and New York Giants. The defensive back won a Super Bowl while with the Giants.

Wilcy Moore

Moore was a standout baseball player from Hollis. He began his pro career in 1922 in the Class D Texas-Oklahoma League. The sidearm pitcher finished the 1926 season with a 30-4 record, which led to a contract in '27 from the powerful New York Yankees. After a successful big league career, he became a cotton farmer in Hollis.

Tinker Owens

Owens was a multi-sport athlete at Miami High School in northeastern Oklahoma. He helped the Wardogs win the Class 3A state title in 1972. Owens was a wide receiver at OU. The two-time All-American was named MVP of the Sugar Bowl as a freshman; he also helped the Sooners win national championships in 1974 and '75. Owens went on to play four years in the NFL for the New Orleans Saints.

Lee Roy Smith

A member the famed Smith wrestling family. He was two-time state wrestling champion at Del City High School, before becoming an NCAA titlist and All-American at Oklahoma State. Smith wrestled internationally and won three national freestyle championships and qualified for two U.S. teams for the World Championships. He was also a successful international coach for the U.S. and college coach at Arizona State. Smith is currently the executive director of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum in Stillwater.
