Former President Donald Trump predicted Monday that President Joe Biden will likely stay in the presidential race because of his "ego."

Trump made the comment to conservative commentator Sean Hannity during an appearance on Fox News.

It looks to me like he may very well stay in. He’s got an ego and he doesn’t wanna quit,” Trump said. “He doesn’t wanna do that. It just looks to me like that’s what he wants.”

A total of nine Democratic congressmembers have said Biden should bow out of the race following his performance at the first presidential debate, according to The Washington Post.

“I think he might very well stay in, and if he does, nobody wants to give that up that way. He is gonna feel badly about himself for a long time,” Trump added. “It’s hard to give it up that way, the way where they tried to force him out.”

Senior sources with the president’s campaign, Democratic National Convention and White House have told Reuters that Vice President Kamala Harris is the top alternative to Biden if he dropped out. Trump predicted the Democratic Party would select her as the nominee in that case.

I think that it will be her. I think they are very concerned about the vote if it’s not her,” the former president said. “They are very, very – I mean, they’re gun-shy. They don’t wanna do it any other way. I’ve actually come to believe that’s what they’re going to do.”

While Trump has prepared to oppose Biden, he noted it wouldn’t matter if Harris replaced the president on the ticket.

“I think she’s an ineffective person. She was in charge of the border. She’s never been there. She didn’t do a good job, and she hasn’t done her job on a lot of things,” Trump said. “But, it would seem to me that, from a political standpoint, that’s who they’re going with.”

Harris has defended Biden, arguing voters need to look at what the president has done during his first term rather than 90 minutes.

“Yes, there was a slow start, but it was a strong finish,” she told CNN after the debate. “What became very clear through the course of the night is that Joe Biden is fighting on behalf of the American people on substance, on policy, on performance. Joe Biden is extraordinarily strong, and that cannot be debated.”
