John C Brizendine OBITUARY

John C Brizendine Jr of Dana Point CA passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 2, 2024, only two weeks after losing his beloved wife of nearly 78 years, Shirley. John was born in Independence, MO on August 3, 1925 and attended William Chrisman High School. He was active in scouting as a youth, attaining the honor of becoming an Eagle Scout. He remained active in the Boy Scouts throughout his life, serving on its Board of Directors. Upon graduation, John volunteered for the US Navy and became a pilot during World War II. He developed his interest in aviation by attending Kansas University, earning Bachelors and Masters degrees in aeronautical engineering. He immediately became an integral part of the burgeoning aerospace industry in southern California, going to work for Douglas Aircraft Company in their flight test division. His talents and efforts were recognized and rewarded as he became program manager for the DC-8, DC-9 and DC-10 aircraft, and ultimately President of the Douglas Aircraft Division of McDonnell Douglas Corporation. He eventually moved to rival Lockheed Corporation where he led their aircraft division for several years prior to his retirement. He was honored with numerous awards over his long career such as the Howard Hughes Memorial award. He participated on the NASA Aerospace Advisory Panel and the F22 Team Executive Committee. He loved his work, his family, golf, gardening and especially spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his son John Sands and his wife JoDee, grandsons Ryan and Jeremy, grand-daughters in law Kelley and Melissa, and six great grandchildren Elliana, Adalyn, Clara, Calvin, Ava, and Lila. This world is a lesser place without this man. The family is planning a celebration of his life along with Shirley’s at the end of July. In lieu of flowers, John has requested donations be made to the aerospace engineering program at Kansas University.
