Jane M. Lancour OBITUARY

Jane Lancour passed away peacefully on April 17, 2024, in Hoag Hospital, Irvine, CA. Jane was born to James and Isabelle Hamann in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on October 10, 1935. She graduated from St. John’s School of Nursing in Springfield, Illinois in 1956. She practiced nursing in Effingham and Decatur, Illinois, before relocating to Milwaukee. Jane’s dedication to nursing was unwavering. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing [BSN] and Master of Science in Nursing [MSN] degrees at Marquette University while working in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at Aurora St. Lukes Hospital. Her passion and expertise led her to assume the positions of Director of Clinical Nursing at St. Lukes Hospital and Assistant Clinical Professor at Marquette University.Jane moved to California in 1988 as a consultant for Quality Assurance at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center [ UCI.] She also worked for the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations [JCAHO]. Jane’s impact on the nursing community was profound. She was the President of North American Nursing Diagnosis Association [NANDA] from 1988-1993, advocating for quality nursing care. Her influence extended to national committees, including the Nursing Advisory Panel for the Agency for Healthcare Policy and Research, the American Nurses Association Congress of Nursing Practice, and the ANA Nursing Organization Liaison Forum.She started her own business, JML and Associates, as a Nursing Administration Consultant reviewing and evaluating nursing policies and standards in hospitals throughout California in preparation for their JCAHO accreditation. Predeceased by parents, James and Isabelle Hamann, brother, James R. Hamann, and sister, Joan Haman. Survived by daughter, Roben Dowdell, brother, John Hamann, sister-in-law, Stephanie, Nephew, Chad M. Hamann, grand-nephew Jack Peter, grand-nieces, Abby Peterson and Ruby Hamann, and sister, Jean Hamann. Further survived by many cousins and friends. Cousin David and longtime friend Mary Ruffolo will dearly miss her. Jane was a lifelong learner with an intellectual curiosity that provided her with many exciting and fun ‘experiences” in California. She loved music, having played both the organ and piano. Jane was an avid reader who also enjoyed gardening, flower photography, theater, traveling, and an occasional glass of wine with friends. She mentored many throughout her lifetime, always taking pleasure in others’ accomplishments.In lieu of flowers, a memorial to St. Ben’s Community Meal Program, Milwaukee, or a charity of your choice is appreciated. Celebration of Life will be in Lannon, WI this summer.
