Founded nearly a century ago in Chicago, Rainbow Cone, known for its sliced (never scooped) stacks of ice cream, will open one of its first California stores in Orange County later this year.

Cypress will host the circa-1926 ice cream institution’s inaugural Golden State location, with plans on opening by late 2024 at 9527 Valley View St.

The menu at Rainbow Cone runs the gamut from classic flavors like chocolate and strawberry to more contemporary concoctions like Superman and birthday cake. Its eponymous cone comes with five stacks of chocolate, strawberry, Palmer House (vanilla with cherries and walnuts), pistachio and orange sherbet.

Other ice cream creations on Rainbow Cone menus include Orange Dream (orange sherbet and vanilla slices), Minty City (mint chocolate chip and chocolate) and Chocolate Obsession (chocolate, peanut butter swirl, cookies and cream, and big muddy ice cream).

Shakes, sundaes, layered ice cream cakes and mini doughnuts will also be available.

Entrepreneur Anne Hsiung, a former nurse and mother, will own and operate the three Rainbow Cone franchises.

“My husband and I have always dreamed of opening a family business of our own and passing that legacy on to our children and their children’s children,” said Hsiung in a written release. “When we heard that my favorite childhood ice cream shop was looking to expand outside of Chicago, we knew we needed to bring this delicious, nostalgia-inducing experience to families and visitors in Southern California.”

The company has yet to announce the two other upcoming Southern California locations.

Rainbow Cone, part of the Buona Companies restaurant group, has recently expanded its franchising efforts. In addition to Rainbow Cone’s growth in Southern California, the company plans on adding ice cream shops in Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Florida, Tennessee and Texas.
