A 22-year-old man, who was out on bail on robbery, was charged Tuesday with shooting a man in Mission Viejo.

Baltazar Santosalvarado of Mission Viejo pleaded not guilty to two counts of attempted murder and single counts of aggravated mayhem, assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a short-barreled shotgun and rifle, all felonies.

Santosalvarado, who pleaded not guilty Tuesday, is also facing sentencing enhancements for the personal use of a gun and committing an offensewhile out on bail, according to court records.

The defendant was accused of a shooting on Sunday as well as an assault on Oct. 13, according to the criminal complaint. Santosalvarado was out on bail for a Feb. 13, 2022, robbery, and felony vandalism April 16, 2023, according to court records.

On Sunday, sheriff’s deputies were dispatched about 1:10 a.m. to the 26000 block of Via Damasco regarding the shooting, sheriff’s Sgt. Matt Parrish said.

When deputies arrived they detained Santosalvarado, who said he fired the gun, Parrish said. The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the arm and was taken to a hospital, where he was in critical but stable condition, Parrish said.
