It was a “celebration of freedom” Wednesday night as Buena Park held its inaugural Juneteenth event.
A federal holiday, Juneteenth commemorates the day enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free — the last group to learn so, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
At Boisseranc Park on Wednesday evening, June 19, the city held its first Juneteenth event with live music, food trucks, and vendors. Friendship Baptist Church’s Rev. Kenneth C. Curry, Jr. gave the keynote address.
If you missed out on Buena Park’s event, some cities are holding more Juneteenth celebrations over the weekend. Be sure to check your city’s events calendar.
