LONG BEACH — Devin Askew, a former Mater Dei High star who spent two injury-plagued seasons at Cal before entering the transfer portal last month, has committed to play his final college season at Long Beach State.

LBSU will be the fourth school for Askew, a former five-star recruit who began his college career at Kentucky in the 2020-21 season, then played one season at Texas before spending the past two seasons in Berkeley.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound point guard was Cal’s leading scorer in 2022-23, when he averaged 15.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists, but he played in just 13 games (all starts) because he suffered a sports hernia. He scored a career-high 25 points against Arizona and had 17 points or more in eight games that season.

Askew opened the 2023-24 season as Cal’s starting point guard, but he was limited to six games before being shut down on Jan. 9 with what proved to be a season-ending foot injury. He averaged 6.2 points per game.

“Devin’s experience is going to serve us well,” new Long Beach State head coach Chris Acker said in a press release. “He is a true floor general with an ability to get everyone on the same page on the court. He is a great person and comes from a tremendous family. We look forward to him continuing his journey here as we work to build toward representing our great tradition here.”

Originally signing with Kentucky as the No. 26 prospect in the country, Askew played in 25 games and made 20 starts as a true freshman with the Wildcats before transferring to Texas. A star with Mater Dei, he averaged 16.7 points, 6.3 assists and 4.9 rebounds per game in his senior season while earning first-team All-CIF honors.

Askew is the second transfer to arrive for Long Beach State this spring, joining Derrick Michael Xzavierro from Grand Canyon.
