Although tours and festivals have been canceled left and right due to the continued global spread of novel coronavirus, rock fans were holding out hope that somehow, someway, Green Day would be able to pull off the U.S. dates of its Hella Mega Tour.

Sadly, the East Bay trio officially pulled the plug on the summer 2020 trek, which was originally scheduled to play out in stadiums across the U.S. with Weezer, Fall Out Boy and The Interrupters including Petco Park in San Diego on July 24 and Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on July 25.

“Hopefully this doesn’t come as a surprise, but as much as we were all looking forward to seeing you all this summer, everyone’s safety is our highest priority so we’ve officially made the call to reschedule all North American dates of the Hella Mega tour until next year,” Green Day released in a statement via its various social media pages.

“We’ll be announcing Summer 2021 dates with the same venues very soon, so hold on to those tickets. All ticket holders will be emailed directly with refund options as well. Please stay safe, and we look forward to seeing you in 2021.”

Green Day released its 13th studio album, “Father Of All …” back in February and, along with its tour mates Weezer and Fall Out Boy, put out some new music as a teaser for its massive tour when it was announced last year.

Green Day last played the area during KROQ 106.7 FM’s final “Kevin & Bean’s Breakfast with” series at its HD Radio Sound Space in October. The band played a short set for a couple hundred lucky call-in winners and treated those lucky fans to its new album title track, “Father Of All …”

During the interview portion of the event, vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong described the songs from “Father Of All …” as being like “two-minute just punches in the face” and drummer Tre Cool said the band was preparing for the stadium gigs by doing “lots of squats.”
