The first remote meeting of the CIF Southern Section Council could have far-reaching effects.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Thursday’s meeting of the CIF-SS Council will be done via webinar and telephone. The Council is the CIF-SS legislative body.

The proposal on the agenda that has drawn the most attention concerns the football playoffs. The proposal would have football playoff divisions based on the current season’s results.

In recent seasons, teams were placed into a playoff division based on power rankings that were based on a team’s regular-season and playoff performances the previous two seasons.

The proposal would place teams into divisions based on the current regular-season’s results. The brackets would be created and seeded based on 2020 power rankings put together by CalPreps.com.

CIF-SS commissioner Rob Wigod said indications are the proposal will pass.

“I’ve been in on a lot of league meetings and league representative meetings,” said Wigod, who like other CIF-SS officers has no vote in Council proceedings, “and there seems to be support for it from them. Our football advisory committee is strongly in favor of it.”

The CIF-SS Executive Committee, the administrative body for the CIF-SS Council, earlier this month supported the football playoff proposal 22-0. Executive Committee support for a proposal often precedes Council support for a proposal.

Also on the agenda is a proposal that would give competitive cheer a once-a-year exemption from the CIF ban on Sunday competition. The annual National High School Cheerleading Championships in Florida are held on a Sunday. The Executive Committee, after much debate, supported the proposal 13-8-1.

Thursday’s Council meeting had been scheduled for March 31. It was postponed when the outbreak of coronvirus became a national issue.

The Council is made up of league representatives, and it creates, amends, changes and deletes CIF-SS regulations and by-laws that are in the CIF-SS constitution.
