UPDATED:

A pedestrian who was walking lanes of the 5 freeway in Laguna Hills died after being hit by a tractor trailer early Tuesday, the California Highway Patrol said.

Just after midnight a white International tractor trailer was traveling on the southbound 5 freeway. On the lanes north of Alicia Parkway, a man possibly in his 20s, was walking in the lanes eastward, CHP Officer Rafael Reynoso said.

A caller told the CHP a pedestrian was running in lanes, according to the CHP incident log.

Reynoso said the truck was unable to avoid the pedestrian and hit him, causing fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead on scene by the Orange County Fire Authority.

The driver, a 51-year-old man, was uninjured and cooperated with investigators.

Reynoso said it is unclear as to why the man was on the roadway. Investigators are also trying to determine whether drugs or alcohol played a role.

Anyone with information is asked to call the CHP Capistrano area-office 949-487-4000 or the CHP 24-hour non-emergency line at 949-784-6700.
