• Shaheen wins Senate race despite strong push from Brown. Read More ▼

Jeanne Shaheen, a Democrat and former governor of New Hampshire, held on to her seat in the Senate despite a spirited campaign by Scott P. Brown. Mr. Brown had served as a senator from Massachusetts, and moved to New Hampshire last year after being beaten by Elizabeth Warren in a Senate contest. Despite a talent for retail campaigning and his arguments that he had strong roots in the state, Mr. Brown suffered under the burden of a carpetbagger label. Exit polls showed the issue was important: When asked “Has Brown lived in N.H. long enough?” a majority of voters said no — and some nine out of 10 of those voters expressed support for Ms. Shaheen.

Gov. Maggie Hassan won a competitive race against Walt Havenstein, a businessman with no previous electoral experience. The race tightened in the final days, but Mr. Havenstein, who received campaign help from visitors like Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey, Senator Marco Rubio of Florida and Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, could not close the gap. Ms. Hassan and Ms. Shaheen, in turn, benefited from a visit by Hillary Rodham Clinton, who won New Hampshire’s primary in 2008.

• Guinta breaks through all-female delegation to Washington. Read More ▼

In one of the nation’s most persistent tug-of-war political battles, Frank C. Guinta, a Republican, won the contest for the First Congressional District against Representative Carol Shea-Porter, the Democratic incumbent. She had beaten Mr. Guinta for the same office in 2012; he had defeated her in 2010. With Mr. Guinta’s victory, New Hampshire will lose a national distinction: The state’s governor and the entire Washington delegation were women. In the Granite State’s Second Congressional District, Representative Ann McLane Kuster, a Democrat, beat Marilinda Garcia, a Republican member of the state House of Representatives.
