The past couple years have been rough on medical professionals, but a North Carolina nurse literally hit the jackpot with a $2 winning ticket that turned out to be just what the doctor ordered.

Nikita Adeogun of Dunn, N.C., told NC Education Lottery officials that when a clerk at the Food Line store where she’d purchased a 10X The Cash ticket Thursday informed her she had a winner, she immediately drove to lottery headquarters in Raleigh to collect what she thought would be a $600 to $700 price. Once the 47-year-old RN arrived, after a roughly 40 minute drive, she was informed her winning actually totaled $113,715. After taxes, that came out to $80,750.

“My heart just stopped,” Adeogun said. “I’m just so grateful.”

She said her plan for the money right now is to pay off some bills. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a registered nurse in North Carolina earns $68,950 annually.

Morning Consult reported in October 2021 that 30% of health care workers had either quit their jobs or been laid off during the COVID-19 pandemic. That report found another 31% of health care workers still in that line of work have thought about leaving.
