Everything you need to know

Submitting your portfolio for consideration to the Fashion Design and/or Fashion Pattern Cutting course is an opportunity for you to showcase your skills, interests, style and personality.

It’s also an opportunity to make sure we have the right expertise and resource to support you during your time at NTU.

We understand your work is unique to you, but we've pulled together some useful advice to give you tips on what to consider and what we're looking for in your submission.

What you should consider

Be selective and showcase a range of work which shows us who you are and what you are interested in, as well as demonstrating a range of art and design skills and enthusiasm for the course.

This might include creative research, broad cultural references, concept development, design development, photography, life drawing, mixed media work and digital work, as applicable and relevant to your area of study. Your focus may vary but please select work that demonstrates your creative potential for Fashion Design.

We’d love to see evidence of your working process so show us two of your most recent sketchbooks and any working drawings that relate to specific projects in your portfolio.

Show us anything that demonstrates your interest in fashion, textiles, knitwear, design or art - you might keep these things in your sketchbook, a folder, a visual diary etc.

What are we looking for?

  • A quality range of visual concepts, narrative responses and a level of innovative and creative thinking.
  • Good presentation skills, and the ability to visualise and articulate ideas.
  • Your ability to handle a variety of technologies, materials and processes.
  • Your willingness to experiment in a range of visual media.
  • Self-motivated work which shows your passion for the subject.

Submitting your portfolio

  • To create a digital portfolio in PDF or PowerPoint format (15 pages/ slides), please arrange your work in the order you’d like us to look at it, adding any explanatory text.
  • Your portfolio should be submitted as a single unzipped file not exceeding 10mb.
  • Your written statement can be uploaded as a separate file.

Can I submit my work as single files like JPEGS or PNGs?

No, work must be arranged in presentation software so we can see it in the same order you would show us as if you were presenting it yourself. Your written statement can be uploaded as a separate file.

Contact Ask NTU if you have any questions or if there's anything you'd like to discuss.
