Academic English and Language Support

We provide academic English and language support to international students who meet our English language requirements and are studying for a degree at NTU. These sessions are offered free of charge and are non-credit-bearing and non-assessed.

We're committed to providing you with the best learning experience and to help you reach your full potential. We are a team of experienced Academic English Language lecturers, and our provision is tailored to help you excel in your studies.

Our sessions are aligned to your assignments, making it easier for you to understand how to communicate critically and with the appropriate academic tone. We work with your Course Leaders and Module Tutors to ensure our provision is tailored to your degree requirements.

Study skills

We can help improve your study skills in the following:

  • Critical reading skills: helping you to explore academic texts more effectively.
  • Presentation and discussion skills: increase your fluency to contribute to academic discussion.
  • Listening skills: helping to make your lecturers and seminars more productive.
  • Academic writing skills: learn how to write what you mean in an accurate, academic way.

We teach Academic English in a variety of ways to suit all learning styles:

  • Face-to-face classes.
  • Live Teams workshops.
  • Online materials (to access at your convenience).
  • One-to-one tutorials.

Individual Tutorials

One-to-one tutorials are a great opportunity and bring many benefits:

  • An individual focus on you and how you learn best.
  • Detailed input on the areas you specify (such as a specific course assignment).
  • Informal discussion on how you can personally excel.

Other English courses

At NILIC, we also teach Pre-Sessional English courses which are designed for international students who need help meeting our entry requirements. And we offer free General English classes to students and members of the local community in practice sessions run by our trainee teachers.
