Wow. I'm glad tomorrow is April Fools Day because NPR just received some news that is certainly no joke.

The 70th Annual George Foster Peabody Awards were announced today, recognizing excellence and meritorious work by radio and television stations, networks, webcasters, producing organizations and individuals.

NPR was honored with (count 'em):

- NPR Islamabad correspondent Julie McCarthy for her extraordinary coverage of Pakistan

- The NPR News Investigation "Behind the Bail Bond System," reported by correspondent Laura Sullivan

- The NPR News Investigation "Seeking Justice for Campus Rapes," reported by correspondent Joseph Shapiro in collaboration with the Center for Public Integrity

- We also share the award with Youth Radio for the series "Trafficked", which was co-produced and broadcast by All Things Considered

Besides these NPR wins, public radio scored even more Peabodies today for WNYC's Radiolab (co-hosted by Robert Krulwich) and the radio documentary "Lucia's Letter" from NPR Member station WGCU-FM.

If you happened to be keeping count over the years (don't worry, we are), you might know that today's announcement brings the grand total of Peabody Awards received by NPR and NPR programming to 56.

You can find more details in our press release. And Fresh Air has also compiled a handy list of all of the Peabody recipients in public media (say it with us, #gopublic).

Joining us in congratulating all the winners.
