Eccoci al momento di tirare le somme e come sempre vorrei partire dal prezzo, che è un dato molto importante per poter giudicare un prodotto. Questo iPad Pro nella versione da 13 pollici parte da 1569 euro per il modello con 256 GB di storage, che diventano 2299 per quello con 1 TB di memoria, a mio modo di vedere l'unico da prendere in considerazione se vogliamo alimentare il discorso di longevità affrontato sopra. I tagli da 256 GB e 512 GB, infatti, sono dotati di 8 GB di memoria RAM, contro i 16 dei modelli da 1 e 2 TB. Ora, non stiamo parlando di 14 o 12 GB contro 16, stiamo parlando del doppio della memoria RAM che, se magari oggi sono sufficienti, non possiamo essere certi che lo saranno anche tra uno o due anni quando magari saranno arrivati applicativi professionali più completi e impegnativi in termini di richiesta di risorse.

Apple è maestra nel suo lavoro. È impeccabile nella parte di progettazione dei dispositivi, e quando vengono presentati prodotti come questo iPad Pro c’è davvero ben poco da dire, ed è bravissima nel rendere ogni prodotto che realizza desiderabile da tutti, a tal punto che arrivano ad acquistarlo anche coloro che potrebbero farne tranquillamente a meno. L’esempio tipico è il Vision Pro: è evidente che ci troviamo davanti ad un qualcosa che, per il prezzo e le capacità, può essere sfruttato solo in determinati ambiti professionali, ma se Apple avesse guardato esclusivamente a quella nicchia di utenti non se ne sarebbe parlato così tanto e le vendite ne avrebbero risentito.

When Apple announced the iPad Pro 11, it piqued my interest. I’ve always been a fan of the bigger iPad Pro, but despite having an M2 processor in the last generation, I found the trade-offs too much. These were mainly the weight, ergonomics, lack of Pro features in iPad OS, and the weight of the Magic Keyboard, which made the iPad too heavy overall. Almost all of these are now fixed, and the iPad Pro (2024) is the best tablet I’ve ever used. The vastly reduced weight of the iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard make it an absolute joy to use. I’ve found that the 13-inch is better for my needs than the 11-inch, which can feel cramped, but there’s nuance to that decision.

There’s now that upgraded M2 Air on sale from £599 or you could simply buy the 10th Gen model at the new price of £349.

The iPad Pro 2024 is an exceptional tablet. Its vivid OLED display is a marvel to behold and the new thin and light design makes it more portable than ever. I’m also a fan of its speedy M4-powered performance and astonishing battery life. Sure, its peripherals are expensive, but as a device, the iPad Pro has everything you could ever want from a tablet. The only loose thread is the iPad Pro’s AI capabilities. This has been a sticking point for me whenever I review an “AI” computer since there just aren’t many applications that take advantage of a chip's NPU (Neural Processing Unit) in any appreciable way. Apple says the M4 and its onboard Neural Engine NPU is an “absolute powerhouse for AI,” but I’ve yet to see that. Hopefully, the company will go into further detail during WWDC 2024. Even if the iPad Pro never becomes an AI powerhouse, it’s still an incredible tablet for people who want a powerful slate with a gorgeous OLED display. The iPad Pro has set a standard for all premium tablets to follow.

Surely there has to be to power up the software to match the terrific power on show here.

One thing to note about performance is that it will vary slightly depending on the amount of storage your iPad Pro has. The 256GB and 512GB models will have M4 chips that have 9 CPU cores and 8GB of memory, while the 1TB and 2TB will have chips that have 10 CPU cores and 16GB of memory. I don't think the additional CPU core is going to make a huge difference but it's something you ought to take note. I’ve long maintained that the iPad Pros were the most stunning hardware that Apple makes and the newest models reinforce that thought. These new tablets have beautiful displays, remarkable build quality and thinness, and even better performance. Objectively, they are better tablets than the ones they replace. But do you really need a tablet with such ridiculously overkill specs? I’ll need more time with them to give you a definitive answer.

The keyboard isn’t the only new Pro accessory. Apple has also revealed the new Apple Pencil Pro, which adds haptic feedback, a squeeze gesture and a gyroscope to make using the pencil even more natural to use than before. These sound like minor upgrades, but being able to slightly rotate the Pencil Pro and have it change how my handwriting looked was seamless. If you’re a digital artist, this Pencil upgrade is going to be really hard to avoid. That said, because Apple moved the webcam to the long side of the new iPad models, this new Pencil needed an upgraded magnet and charging array to fit over the camera module. This means it only works with the new iPad Pro and the new iPad Air. The Pencil Pro also has ‘Find My,’ so you can locate it when it’s lost.

Most definitely — we do enjoy our time with the current iPad Pros, and — as mentioned — even use the M1 units from back in 2021 excessively, with no slowdowns still. If you do spend a lot of time on a tablet, they make up for their price in value — with their performance, screen quality, sound, usability throughout a dynamic day, and software ecosystem. If you are looking for a glorified Netflix machine — an iPad Air may be the better financial decision.

Apple M4 10-Core GPU: Un adattatore grafico integrato progettato da Apple che presenta 10 core. Questa iGPU è integrata nei SoC Apple M4 (sia nella versione a 9 core che in quella a 10 core); utilizza l'architettura di memoria unificata e non è molto diversa dalla GPU M3 a 10 core in termini di caratteristiche. I primi confronti di benchmark tra la GPU M4 a 10 core e la GPU M3 a 10 core indicano guadagni di prestazioni fino al 15%, ma è importante affermare subito che la sostenibilità delle prestazioni del chip M4 è destinata ad essere molto scarsa a causa del telaio sottile dei nuovi iPad, che non dispone di alcun tipo di raffreddamento attivo. Proprio come il resto del chip Apple M3, l'adattatore grafico è prodotto con un processo TSMC di "seconda generazione a 3 nm".

Queste schede grafiche dovrebbero essere in grado di far funzionare tutti i giochi attuali con un framerates fluido ma rinunciando al livello di dettaglio massimo. Specialmente i giochi impegnativi come Crysis, Age of Conan, o Mass Effect sono utilizzabili soltanto con impostazioni grafiche ridotte.
